Other design guidance
Our general design guidance details checklists and links to national governing bodies and other useful sporting organisations
We believe that being active should be an intrinsic part of everyone’s daily life – and the design of where we live and work plays a vital role in keeping us active.
Good design should contribute positively to making places better for people and create environments that make the active choice the easy choice for people and communities.
In partnership with Public Health England, we've produced the Active Design Guidance. This guidance builds on the original Active Design (2007) objectives of improving accessibility, enhancing amenity, and increasing awareness, while setting out the Ten Principles of Active Design.
Compact athletics
In addition to Active Design, post-project review of schemes identified as good practice within the Active England programme are available to download below.
The compact athletics concept is based on an innovative approach to athletics provision that scales down the main elements of full-size athletics facilities and makes affordable solutions for smaller sites.
The compact facilities can be created on almost any available site to provide a dedicated space for recreational athletics and basic training.
This new guidance shows what is possible and gives practical technical advice. It includes indicative costs of various sizes of facility along with layout, specification and construction details.
